In a country with scarce blood resources and insufficient voluntary blood donors, our Blood Centre has simplified the process of obtaining blood. When you need blood, you can simply call the NBC and request the required component. If it is available, you will receive it without the need for replacement, just by paying the predetermined testing charges.
If you are a registered blood donor with the NBC or an organizer of a blood drive, you can mention that when placing your request. However, you will still need to provide a doctor’s prescription for the specific blood component needed, as well as a blood sample from the patient for cross-matching.
This streamlined approach to blood banking is a testament to the Centre’s commitment to voluntary, non-remunerated blood donations, making the process more accessible and efficient for those in need.
It takes about 1 ½ hour to cross match the blood sample and provide you with the needed component. When you need more than 1 component it may take a little more time as various technical and medical precautions are taken before handing over the component to you.
NBC offers the facility of sample pick up and delivery of components from distant hospitals. The patient need not come all the way to the blood centre. A nominal charge is levied towards this service to accommodate the cost. With this the patient could get the needed blood component without any hassle.
The Narsipatnam Blood Centre adheres to a uniform, government-approved pricing structure for all patients and hospitals in the city. Blood testing charges are strictly regulated by national norms, and no blood center is permitted to exceed these approved cost limits. The center is only allowed to recover the expenses it incurs during the blood banking process within these parameters.
The Narsipatnam Blood Centre upholds the highest quality standards in blood collection, processing, and distribution. These activities carry significant costs, as much of the required equipment and materials are imported. However, the center is able to provide international-quality blood products at just 1/10th the typical international price. For example, in America, a single blood product can cost anywhere from $100 to $300, whereas the NBC offers the same quality products in India for just $10 to $15. By keeping costs low, the NBC is able to offer subsidies and benefits to support poor and needy patients.
NBC discourages replacement donations, where a patient provides their own donor to give blood in exchange for receiving blood from the blood bank, often while also paying additional testing fees. These replacement donors may be paid professionals or individuals close to the patient, who may conceal information from medical staff to obtain the needed blood components. Such replacement donations can increase the risks associated with blood donation. NBC actively avoids and does not encourage this practice.
